1. Who We Are
Your Name in Kanji is a small independent shop operated from Japan. We turn names into Japanese kanji and sell printed items featuring them. Our website is kanji.benkyou.jp.
You can reach us at info@benkyou.jp.
2. Information We Collect
Information you give us
- The name you type into the kanji converter. We use it to generate kanji and, if you create a product, to print it on that product.
- If we do not yet have characters for a name, we store the typed name so that we can add them later. We store the name only. We do not ask for, and do not store, any contact details alongside it.
Information collected automatically
- A randomly generated session identifier held in your browser’s sessionStorage. It is not linked to your identity and is cleared when you close the tab.
- Which page you viewed, which kanji you selected and which product you clicked.
- Referral parameters present in the URL, such as a code identifying which of our advertisements you arrived from.
- Your browser’s User-Agent string, which we check in order to filter automated traffic. We do not store it.
- IP addresses, in one case only: failed sign-in attempts to our administrative interface are recorded together with the originating IP address, to stop repeated guessing. We do not record the IP addresses of ordinary visitors in our own database.
Information relating to orders and custom proofing
For standard catalog orders, we retain only non-personal order information needed for order tracking and sales measurement, such as the order identifier, products ordered, quantities and prices.
Personalised items work differently, because we have to show you the design before it is printed. For an order that requires proof approval, we store the names to be printed, your email address and your delivery address. We keep the delivery address because, once you approve the design, it is what we pass to Printify so that your order can be shipped. These details are kept until the order is complete and the period for returns and disputes has passed. We do not use them to build marketing profiles, and we do not sell them.
We do not receive or store your payment card details, bank details or any other payment credentials. Those are handled by the storefront where you placed your order and by its payment processors, and do not reach our systems.
3. How We Use Information
We use this information to:
- generate kanji and create the product you asked for
- fulfil and ship your order
- understand which advertisements and pages lead to sales, so that we know where to put our effort
- detect and limit automated abuse of the service
We do not sell personal information. We do not use it to build advertising profiles about you.
4. Pinterest API and Pinterest Data
We use the Pinterest API solely for our own Pinterest account. Specifically, we use it to publish Pins from that account, to manage our own boards, and to measure how our own Pins and boards perform.
- We do not offer Pinterest API access to third parties or to our users.
- We do not sell, rent or trade Pinterest data.
- We do not use the Pinterest API to collect information about Pinterest users.
- Any performance data we retrieve relates to content we published ourselves.
5. Service Providers
We rely on the following companies. Each processes data on our behalf and under its own privacy policy.
- Printify — creates, prints and ships the products. Printify receives and holds your order and delivery details, and handles payment.
- Supabase — hosts our database, in which the information described in Section 2 is stored.
- Vercel — hosts this website and serves its pages.
- The storefront you order from — depending on where you place your order, this may be Etsy, Shopify or Printify’s own storefront. It takes your payment and holds the order and delivery details you gave it, under its own privacy policy.
- Pinterest — receives the Pins we publish from our own account. We do not send Pinterest any visitor or customer personal information.
We also use Google’s Gemini API to write descriptions of our own products from our own product catalogue and product images. No visitor or customer personal information is sent to it.
6. Cookies, Browser Storage and Similar Technologies
We do not use cookies for our own measurement. Instead we use two kinds of storage built into your browser, each for a different purpose.
sessionStorage — measurement. What we keep there is a session identifier and, if you arrived through one of our advertisements, the referral code from that link. This lets us see which advertisements lead people to create something. sessionStorage is cleared when you close the browser tab.
localStorage — your own list. When you create a product, we save a link to it, along with the name, the characters and a picture of the item, in your browser’s localStorage. This is so that you can find what you made when you come back, without having to create an account. It stays on your device. We cannot read it, it is not sent to us, and it is not used for advertising or to track you across other websites. You can remove it at any time with the “Clear” button shown above the list, or by clearing this site’s data in your browser settings.
We do not run third-party advertising or analytics trackers on this site.
We cannot state that no cookies at all are set, because our hosting and infrastructure providers may set their own. Please refer to their privacy policies for what they may set and why.
7. Data Retention
- Session identifiers and page-view records: kept while we are still measuring the campaign they belong to, then deleted.
- Standard catalog order records: kept for as long as we may need them for returns, disputes and accounting. These records do not contain your name, email address, postal address or phone number.
- Proof records for personalised orders: these do contain the names to be printed, your email address and your delivery address, as described in Section 2. They are deleted once the order is complete and the period for returns and disputes has passed.
- Names submitted for characters we do not yet support: kept until we have added those characters.
- Failed administrative sign-in records: kept only as long as needed to block repeated attempts.
If you would like your data deleted sooner, write to info@benkyou.jp and we will delete what we are not obliged to keep.
8. Data Sharing
We share personal information only with the service providers listed in Section 5, and only so that they can carry out their function.
We may disclose information where the law requires it, or where it is necessary to protect our rights or the safety of others.
We do not sell personal information.
9. Your Privacy Rights
Depending on where you live, you may be able to ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we hold about you
- correct information that is wrong
- delete information we hold about you
- stop using your information for a particular purpose
To make any of these requests, write to info@benkyou.jp. We will respond as promptly as we are able. We may need to ask you for information in order to confirm who you are before we act.
People in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and in certain United States jurisdictions, including California, have specific rights under their local law. We aim to honour requests made under those laws.
10. Children’s Privacy
This site is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe that a child has given us personal information, write to info@benkyou.jp and we will delete it.
11. Data Security
Information is stored with the providers listed in Section 5 and is transmitted over encrypted connections. Access to our database uses server-side credentials that are never exposed to the browser. Our administrative interface is password-protected and locks out repeated failed attempts.
No system is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
12. International Users
We operate from Japan. Our service providers operate in a number of countries, including the United States. If you use this site from elsewhere, your information will be transferred to and processed in those countries, whose data protection laws may differ from those where you live.
13. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy. When we do, we will change the date shown at the top. If a change is significant, we will say so on this page.
